Why Triphala?
Triphala is an Ayurvedic herbal mixture consisting of the fruits of three plants: Haritaki, Bibhitaki and Amalaki. This combination has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries.
The term “triphala” comes from the Sanskrit “tri” meaning “three” and “phala” meaning “fruits”. Triphala therefore literally means “the three fruits”. This name reflects the composition of the remedy and emphasizes the harmonious combination of the three ingredients.
Why is Triphala an antioxidant?
Triphala is an antioxidant due to the bioactive compounds it contains, especially the tannins in the fruits Phyllanthus emblica (Amla), Terminalia bellerica (Bibhitaki) and Terminalia chebula (Haritaki).
The three fruits that make up Triphala contain a variety of compounds:
- Amla, for example, contains vitamin C, tannins and flavonoids.
- Haritaki contains tannins, anthraquinones and chebulic acid, among other things.
- Bibhitaki contains active ingredients such as tannins, flavonoids and ellagic acid.
Why Triphala capsules and not Triphala tablets?
The capsules are free from artificial coating agents. These are required for the production of tablets. They therefore have a rather unpleasant aftertaste. Capsules also offer maximum protection of the active ingredients.
