To maintain optimal vitamin C levels, it is important to ensure an adequate intake.
Recommended Vitamin C Intake
- Daily intake: an intake of around 100–200 mg of vitamin C per day is recommended for adults. This is the amount needed to maintain normal bodily functions.
- Before physical exertion: during periods of increased physical exertion, it may be helpful to increase the dose. An intake of up to 500 mg per day can help strengthen the immune system and protect cells from oxidative stress.
- Upper limit: the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set a safe upper limit of 2,000 mg of vitamin C per day. This should not be exceeded to avoid potential side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort.
