Everything You’ve Always Wanted to Know About Our Organic Astaxanthin!

Astaxanthin is a natural protective compound produced by the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis. The Secret of the Red Microalgae.Astaxanthin belongs to the large family of carotenoids. These are natural pigments found in plants, algae, and microorganisms. However, with its exceptionally vivid, reddish-orange color, astaxanthin is something truly special. In nature, astaxanthin is responsible, among other things, for the characteristic coloring of salmon, shrimp, and flamingos. These animals do not produce the red pigment themselves, however; they obtain it through their diet. Astaxanthin originally comes primarily from microalgae. One of the most important natural sources is the single-celled freshwater microalga Haematococcus pluvialis.

Why does a type of algae produce astaxanthin?

Sunlight is essential for the growth of microalgae. However, when radiation is too intense, reactive oxygen species can form, which stress the delicate cell structures. As a natural response, Haematococcus pluvialis produces astaxanthin. This red pigment absorbs some of the excess radiation, thereby protecting the photosynthetic apparatus.

Simply put, the microalgae produce their own natural sunscreen.

Astaxanthin also helps the algal cell neutralize reactive oxygen species and limit damage to cell membranes and other sensitive structures. The more astaxanthin the microalgae stores, the more its color changes from green to orange and finally to an intense red. At the same time, it enters a resilient dormant state. In this way, the microalgae can better withstand unfavorable environmental conditions and wait for more favorable growth conditions. The red color is thus far more than just a visual characteristic. It is a visible part of Haematococcus pluvialis’s natural survival and defense mechanisms.

Why is the water important?

However, the quality of the astaxanthin ultimately extracted depends not only on the algae themselves. Equally important is where, in what kind of water, and under what conditions they are cultivated. During the initial green phase, the microalgae are provided with optimal growing conditions. Sufficient nutrients and controlled light conditions support cell proliferation and the build-up of algal biomass. Astaxanthin is produced in a protected, closed bioreactor system using pure spring water. In this closed system, light, temperature, pH, nutrient supply, and water quality can be precisely controlled. Inside the bioreactor, the cultures are protected from external influences such as dust, dirt particles, environmental organisms, fluctuating temperatures, and changing weather conditions.

From the green growth phase to the red astaxanthin phase.

In the second phase, light and nutrient supply are specifically adjusted. This activates the microalgae’s natural defense mechanism. It begins to accumulate astaxanthin in its cells and gradually turns red. The red pigment acts as a natural defense mechanism that helps the algae survive adverse environmental conditions. Only once the desired astaxanthin concentration is reached is the algae harvested and prepared for further processing.

That’s what really matters when it comes to astaxanthin!

You cannot identify a good astaxanthin product based solely on the stated amount. Equally important are the origin of the microalgal cultures, the quality of the water used, the cultivation method, the extraction process employed, and traceable purity and quality controls.
